Questions

Short answers about panes, prices and paint

How is the price decided?

By the pane. You get a written price for each kind of pane you have, inside and out or outside only, plus the screens. A visit under the minimum is brought up to the minimum, and the quote says so on its own line.

What counts as a pane?

One sheet of glass. A one-over-one double-hung window has two panes, a six-over-six has twelve, a picture window has one. If you can't tell, text a photo and we will count them for you.

Do I need to be home?

Someone needs to let us in the first time and walk the house with us. After that, you can leave a key or a code with us in writing and we text you when we arrive and when we leave. Outside-only visits don't need anyone home, as long as the gate and screens are reachable.

Are you insured?

We carry general liability insurance, with limits of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, and we send a certificate of insurance on request. The owner confirms these limits before the site goes live.

What happens if a pane breaks?

We stop, photograph it and tell you right away. If a pane that was sound when we started breaks while we wash it, we pay for the glazier to replace that pane. We can't cover a pane that was already cracked, glass with a failed seal that has fogged between its layers, or a sash someone forced open.

Homes built before 1978: will you open painted-shut windows?

No. We clean the glass we can reach and leave painted-shut sashes closed. Homes built before 1978 can have lead paint on sashes and sills, so we don't scrape, sand or force paint. If we see flaking paint at a window we wipe around it, stop there and tell you.

Do you wash windows in winter?

Inside glass, storm panes and tracks, yes, when we have an opening. Outside glass waits for a day above freezing, because water ices on a cold pane. Most outside work books in spring and fall.

What don't you do?

We don't wash outside glass above the second floor from a ladder, clean skylights or roof windows, remove paint, etching or hard-water scale, or work on a wet ladder day. We'll tell you who to call for the ones we skip.

What if it rains on our day?

We text you the evening before if the forecast looks wrong for outside glass. We either do the inside that day or move the whole visit to the next open day, whichever you prefer. There's no charge to move for weather.
